tea, elevated

tea has been my longtime choice drink for breakfast, treats, afternoon pick-me-ups, or bedtime. the varieties abound, sure to complement the weather, season, food, or my mood. english breakfast - an everyday comfort. earl grey - instant spice on a chilly day. honey chamomile - bedtime has arrived. rosebud - iced tea in all its glory.

as much as i enjoy tea, depend on tea, and incorporate tea into my daily life, something has been missing for quite some time. the tea latte.

i've never been fond of dressing my tea with additives: lemon, honey, sugar. tea, straight up, in its minimally or highly brewed state, has been enough. but there are those moments when i do want something more, when adding soy or almond milk changes its profile so i'm drinking something a bit more vibrant. a bit more rich.

adding milk to my tea always seemed special - like i was celebrating simplicity with a splash of sophistication. so why did it never occur to me to embrace the tea latte? tea with steamed milk for goodness' sakes! PLUS the benefit of luxurious foam!

i finally crawled out of the playpen to discover a tantalizing world. my first tea latte undoubtedly made something tingle within. velevty. purposeful. innocence meets passion. i savored its creaminess, first working through the cloud of foam, finally meeting my dear - and dare i say, sensual - friend. welcome back, fall. i trust it's going to be a cozy season with these tea lattes and all.

if all sundays...

...could be like this:

self-timer attempt

i truly don't understand how it is that the time i spend with my mom always feels like the best time. she has this thing about her. this joyful thing. in this day and age, that quality too often seems like it rivals the laws of physics. so what an amazing gift it is to be in the presence of a woman who defeats the hum-drum of life every. single. day.

not captured: a regular stop at extraordinary desserts for delectable treats, tea, and good ol' conversation.

little kids with coffee cups

call me crazy, but there's something wrong - and frankly disturbing - with little kids holding coffee cups. starbucks. peet's. coffee bean. the sight of a 10-year-old walking down the street with pigtails and rainbow nail polish, drinking from one of those disposable paper coffee cups is maddening. since when have the kids of now developed into the uptight, habit-forming counterparts to their parents?

and i could be wrong. little billy or amber could very well be sipping hot cocoa or apple cider, rejoicing in the sophistication of drinking from a mature coffee cup. but still, i just can't bear witness to the image of a sandcastle-building-sleepover-going-recess-playing minor drinking from a coffee cup!

long gone are the days of capri sun and hi-c. and whatever happened to the joy of sucking on a tootsie-pop? nope. apparently not here. not today. this image of coffee-cup carrying kids goes hand-in-hand with that of the 10-year-old texting on her iphone, or the 7-year-old conveniently watching a movie on his ipad at a restaurant.

i may be quick to judge here, but the more i see these minors adopting adult tendencies, the more i sigh in disbelief. show me a kid with a yo-yo and torn jeans in la, and then i'll remove this enormously heavy chip from my shoulder.

not again!

when your night consists of chocolate-dipped macarons, a heat pack, and the movie tangled, there's a pretty good chance it's that time of month...again.

mother flow, please do your thing and get the heck out of here!

groomed

every so often, i just can't take it anymore. i feel sloppy, haggard. hairy. whether it's my mane or my legs, there comes a time for some serious intervening.

and that time happened to be today.

my hair hadn't been cut in five months, my face swallowed by a bush of curls as a product of neglect. the upper lip hadn't been waxed in three months, forcing a double-take by perplexed passersby. and the legs. don't even ask me when i shaved last. summer or not, i am not one to tame those beasts.

but today, something within me was compelled to say NO! next week marks the beginning of fall, so with the change in season should come a change toward refinement. so i did it. i got my hair cut, and enlivened those sleepy curls. i got my lip waxed, resolving the confusion of man vs woman. and as much as i'd like to say i shaved my legs, i regrettably say this has yet to happen. BUT only because my razor is dull and rusted over.

aah, groomed! how a little attention can spark the flame within! i'm a new woman.

en route

i did it. i went against everything i hold true, and bought a kindle. a kindle, for goodness' sakes! to all the e-readers out there, i send you sincerest apologies for my hushed judgments. yes, i first believed it was just a trend - ooh, check out my uber-modest bite into reality - but somehow it stayed. and now i'm an owner.

the morning i made the kindle-commitment was not short of heartfelt qualms. if you do this, you're going to be one of them. what about the covers, the satisfying scents, the physical pages, the room to jot notes? and don't forget the comfort of libraries, the wonders of a bookstore. does it all end with the click of a button? after rationally negotiating with myself, the kindle seemed most compatible with this current lifestyle...

--environmentally friendly
--energy sparing
--instant
--portable
--no fuss, no apps, just books
--cost-effective

this transition into the e-world does, by no means, change my love for the good ol' paperback. nor will it keep me from meandering through the aisles of libraries/bookstores. and don't doubt i will continue to open a book - old, new - to take a good whiff. this kindle is primarily about globally safe convenience.

so judge me all you want. my kindle is en route, and there's no stopping it.

sharpened pencils and stained books

come september, i'm ready for school. the syllabi, library crowds, lists, first-day jitters. and of course, my favorite, skimming the stack of used textbooks for a glimpse of what's to come.

although i'm happy to be where i am at this point in my life, i miss the new school year. so much that i plan to make a syllabus of my own. a pseudo-syllabus. it will include books i'd like to read, places i'd like to see, meals i'd like to cook...anything i can strive to accomplish during the "school year."

i feel good about this. my pseudo-syllabus. it's my attempt to fill a void with things that make sense to me right now. when it comes down to it, who says i can't buy a new moleskin, sharpen my pencils, and read like a madwoman? hey, it's a new year, and i'm ready to learn!
