little kids with coffee cups

call me crazy, but there's something wrong - and frankly disturbing - with little kids holding coffee cups. starbucks. peet's. coffee bean. the sight of a 10-year-old walking down the street with pigtails and rainbow nail polish, drinking from one of those disposable paper coffee cups is maddening. since when have the kids of now developed into the uptight, habit-forming counterparts to their parents?

and i could be wrong. little billy or amber could very well be sipping hot cocoa or apple cider, rejoicing in the sophistication of drinking from a mature coffee cup. but still, i just can't bear witness to the image of a sandcastle-building-sleepover-going-recess-playing minor drinking from a coffee cup!

long gone are the days of capri sun and hi-c. and whatever happened to the joy of sucking on a tootsie-pop? nope. apparently not here. not today. this image of coffee-cup carrying kids goes hand-in-hand with that of the 10-year-old texting on her iphone, or the 7-year-old conveniently watching a movie on his ipad at a restaurant.

i may be quick to judge here, but the more i see these minors adopting adult tendencies, the more i sigh in disbelief. show me a kid with a yo-yo and torn jeans in la, and then i'll remove this enormously heavy chip from my shoulder.
