in a matter of days, g and i will be bobbing our heads and slapping our knees (or some version of having a good time) to the national. someone, pinch me, because i can hardly wait! i've been wanting to see these guys perform for years, but never took the chance to check out their tour dates. on a whim last week, i searched online and lo and behold (!!) they were going to be in los angeles this tuesday for a show. you better believe i jumped on those tickets - my heart racing at the thought of listening to them LIVE. i think i may have even shed a tear.
each of their albums takes me back to a specific moment, as music so often does. i hear a particular song from high violet and am immediately taken to our last trip to seattle - driving out of the the city to hike one of our favorite trails at mount si. or i think about my dad saying that i'm "playing that music too much" as we drove my parents in the rental car to the ballard locks. and how could i forget those songs in the album that remind me of driving through puerto rico - the windows rolled down, the humidity caving in, me and g clenching the moment when there wasn't a care in the world.
then there is the album, trouble will find me. when i hear songs from this album, i can smell the cornmeal cake i was baking, i can feel the hot water from my shower, i can see the coastline as we drove to big sur to run a race. boxer, probably my favorite album, just makes me think about this unique time in my life - the transitions and growth, the hope for goodness sake. it's all-encompassing.
and so that's it. that is why i am so excited to be in the presence of the band that will forever represent one of the greatest periods in my life. i'm trembling just thinking about it!
