banana scan

while in line at starbucks this afternoon, i witnessed an unusual occurrence: a banana being scanned. why, i asked myself, did this seem so out of the ordinary? after two minutes of contemplation and mental flashbacks of trips to the market, it donned on me that fruit don't have bar codes. they have numbers, specific identifications. during that brief moment of banana scanning, i felt a tad offended. that poor piece of sustenance was reduced to the equivalent of an "item." an item with a bar code.

yes, starbucks, i realize you're not a market, but please don't dismiss a fruit's usual identification for reasons i have yet to learn. that blinking light and scanning beep throw fruit advocates, like myself, for a wild loop.
