really, girl scouts?

today i noticed a huge problem with america: outrageously over-priced girl scout cookies. at $4 a box, girl scout cookies are trying to lure the common populace into succumbing to nostalgic recollections of a Do-Si-Do dunked in milk or a perfectly chilled Thin Mint straight from the freezer. there is nothing honorable about that, as far as i'm concerned. $4 a box for 20-or-so mediocre, industrially processed, far-from-fresh annual cookies. seriously? and to make matters worse, the cookie stands are run by the over-involved, over-zealous mothers rather than the girl scouts themselves. this cookie season, i have yet to be won over by a scout. there they are, sitting around, chatting away, or just being completely ambivalent to the prospective customers. i really want to believe there's a badge for mothers to earn.

times must be telling if i can say i remember selling girl scout cookies for half the current price. how exciting it was to proudly sport my sash, showing off each earned adornment. oh, the anticipation of finding out to which storefront i'd be assigned! yes, moms were there to manage the money, but it was our duty to put on the charm, to make our sales pitch: hello! would you like to buy a box of girl scout cookies?!

it all seems a distant memory now. as much as i'd like to get in the spirit, i have a hard time believing that buying a $4 box of less than appetizing cookies sold by a mother is going to achieve the mission of the girl scouts of america: to build girls of courage, confidence, and charcter, who make the world a better place.

so with that said, susie cakes, here i come.
